I found a clever way to teach my fifth graders about prepositions. After watching the Schoolhouse Rock video, we wrote down as many prepositions as possible and defined what a preposition is on a poster. (A preposition is a word that helps define a relation to another word or element in the clause, as in "over the rainbow.")
Next, all my students received an index card with a small circle sticker on the front, as well as a preposition written on the back. Everyone had a different preposition, and their job was to draw a picture to help define the preposition, whether it be "in," "off," "under," etc. It was fun to guess them as a class after they had taped them to our poster.
Hi, my name is Alexis Markavage. I'm a student teacher and a Multiple Subject Credential candidate at Dominican University of California. I graduated from the University of Southern California in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design, but now I'm continuing my education to work in education. I hope to work as an upper elementary school teacher.
